The Quintet for Oboe and Strings was premiered at a Coolidge-sponsored festival in Venice in 1927, by Goossens and the Venetian Quartet. It's a lively and tuneful work that exploits the various tone-colours of the oboe to the fullest, moving from a pastorale-type first movement through to the dance tunes, incorporation an Irish jig as the basis of the final movement.
Numerous recordings of the work are testament to its lasting popularity.
