New Violin Exams Syllabus Books
The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music published a new syllabus for violin in July 2011, looking ahead to 2012-2015. The new set pieces for Violin can be used for exams from 1st January 2012, although there is a cross-over with the current Violin set pieces which can still be used for the first exam period (Period A) in the spring of 2012.
New Violin exam books are available for 2012-15 in various (familiar) versions:
- Score, Part & CD is available at grades 1-7
- Score and part is available at Grades 1-7
- Part only is available at grades 1-5
- Separate CDs for grade 8 only
Violin StarAn attractive new series of repertoire books providing approachable, fun repertoire for the young beginner. This three book series, assembled and arranged by Edward Huws Jones, provides a book and CD for the pupil. there is a separate accompaniment book for the teacher, offering both piano and violin accompaniments.
The Violin Star series begins at pre-Grade 1 and goes up to around Grade 2 in playing standard. Pieces from Volume 2 have been selected for ABRSM violin set pieces at Grade 2 and pieces from Volume 3 have been set as options at Grade 2 level in the new 2012 Violin syllabus.
New technical requirements (scales and sight-reading)

As part of the ABRSM's wider review of technical requirements for all instruments have introduced revised books for all bowed stringed instruments for exams after 1st January 2012. PLEASE NOTE: that unlike the new Violin set pieces, there is no cross-over period for the new technical requirements - the current requirements end on 31st December 2011. The new technical requirements do, however, represent a longer-term change and will extend beyond the four years of the Violin syllabus.
