Bassist-composer Hugh Bushell selected four existing piano pieces and added an obbligato line for double bass. Composed for Double Bass 2000 and premiered at Wells Cathedral School, these short works are aimed at the beginner/intermediate player, offering achievable challenges within the lower range of the instrument.

The preludes are by Chopin, Heller, Lyadov and J.S. Bach. [Heller - Prelude in F - Trinity-Guildhall Grade 5 / J.S. Bach - Prelude in C major - Grade 6 Trinity-Guildhall]. Performance Level: 5;6

"This set comprises four existing piano preludes to each of which Hugh Bushell has written an obbligato bass solo with the intention of adding melodic interest to the original, not unlike the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria. When the piano original has textural figuration, as in Lyadov's B flat Prelude, the solo bass emerges fairly successfully, but I felt it was difficult to improve on Chopin's C minor Prelude. After Heller's Prelude in F, the set concludes with the Bach which Gounod also set, although this obbligato is much busier. These Preludes work well enough and may be performed singly or en suite."
